60–75 minutes · Self-guided learning
You cannot stop a storm, but you can prepare for one. Storms bring high winds, heavy rain, snow and long power cuts, and rural areas are often affected longest. With case studies from every RISE partner country, this module helps your household manage 72 hours without power, water or other services.
You will learn to
- describe the main types of storm, how wind, rain and power outages combine, and why rural areas are often affected longest
- read and act on an official storm warning, and know trusted sources for your area
- identify your own and your community's exposure to storms and long outages, including who may need extra support
- prepare household and community actions for before, during and after a storm, built around a 72-hour goal
- recognise and avoid the dangers of fallen power lines, carbon monoxide and going outdoors in high winds
- take part in community recovery, and identify one household and one community action before the next storm season
