FREE SELF-GUIDED LEARNING

Welcome to the RISE Self-Guided Course

Prepare your household. Strengthen your community.

A free, self-guided disaster preparedness course from the RISE Resilient Communities project.

Floods, storms, earthquakes, heatwaves, wildfires, and conflict affect communities across Europe. The people who respond first are almost always neighbours, and the households that cope best are the ones that are prepared in advance. This course helps you understand the risks where you live, make a practical plan for your household, and play an active part in your community's response and recovery.

The course was developed by partners in Ireland, Spain, Italy, Türkiye and Ukraine, drawing on real events across Europe and the lessons communities learned from them. It is designed for group sessions with a trained facilitator, and every module is also available here for you to work through at your own pace.

Disaster preparedness starts with people. Drawing on real experiences from Ireland, Spain, Italy, Türkiye and Ukraine, this module explores why community resilience matters and how individuals can help prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. You will discover the skills, resources and connections you already have and how to use them to support others.

You will learn to:

  • explain why disaster education and community preparedness matter
  • identify people in your community who may need additional support during an emergency
  • recognise the different roles individuals can play in a crisis
  • identify the skills, tools and connections you can contribute to community resilience
  • explore volunteering opportunities and local organisations you could support
  • choose one practical action to strengthen community preparedness this week

Floods are the most common disaster covered by this course, and one most RISE partner countries have already experienced. The type of flood you face decides how much warning you will get. This module draws on floods in Spain, Türkiye, Italy, Ireland, Germany and Belgium, and helps you prepare your household for the next one.

You will learn to:

  • tell the difference between river, flash and coastal floods, and identify which applies to your home
  • read an official flood warning and know where to check one for your area
  • prepare a household flood plan, a pet evacuation plan and a 72-hour emergency kit
  • take the correct protective action during a flood, at home and in your community
  • identify one household action and one community action to complete this month

An earthquake gives no reliable warning, so readiness has to be in place beforehand. Building on experience in Türkiye and Italy, this module shows why construction quality matters more than magnitude, and teaches you to drop, cover and hold on until it becomes automatic.

You will learn to:

  • identify your own and your community's exposure to ground shaking, building collapse and, where relevant, tsunami
  • take the correct protective action during shaking, indoors, outdoors or in a vehicle
  • prepare a household and community earthquake plan, including gas, aftershocks and damaged buildings
  • identify one household action and one community action to complete before the next high-risk period

Conflict risk can build gradually, which gives time to prepare. Drawing on experience in Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Chechnya and Syria, this module focuses on practical steps: documents, a go-bag, a family communication plan, and how to check information before you act on it or share it. Participation is always at your own pace, and the focus is on preparedness.

You will learn to:

  • recognise the common risks conflict and displacement bring, and that they are not unique to any one country
  • prepare a household plan covering documents, a go-bag, evacuation, communication and support for vulnerable people
  • take appropriate protective action if the security situation changes, including how to verify information
  • identify one household action and one community action to complete this month

Heatwaves and wildfires often arrive in the same season, but the safest action differs: in extreme heat, stay somewhere cool; in a wildfire, leave early. Built on experience in Italy, Spain and Portugal, this module uses two clear tracks so you know what to do for each.

You will learn to:

  • explain how heat, dryness, smoke and wildfire risk can interact
  • identify your personal and community exposure to extreme heat and wildfire
  • prepare separate actions for a heat warning, a smoke event and a wildfire evacuation
  • recognise when urgent health or emergency assistance may be needed
  • identify one household action and one community action to complete before the next high-risk season

You cannot stop a storm, but you can prepare for one. Storms bring high winds, heavy rain, snow and long power cuts, and rural areas are often affected longest. With case studies from every RISE partner country, this module helps your household manage 72 hours without power, water or other services.

You will learn to:

  • describe the main types of storm, how wind, rain and power outages combine, and why rural areas are often affected longest
  • read and act on an official storm warning, and know trusted sources for your area
  • identify your own and your community's exposure to storms and long outages, including who may need extra support
  • prepare household and community actions for before, during and after a storm, built around a 72-hour goal
  • recognise and avoid the dangers of fallen power lines, carbon monoxide and going outdoors in high winds
  • take part in community recovery, and identify one household and one community action before the next storm season
